What is Floatation Hydrotherapy?

The Ubuntu Wellness Centre is one of the very few places in South Africa to offer a completely focused floatation hydrotherapy environment. It is also called sensory isolation or R.E.S.T (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique).

A unique relaxation environment that assists with alleviating anxiety, fears, habits and addictions. An hour floatation equals 4 hours deep sleep. It is beneficial in reducing jet-leg, anxiety, depression and more. The tank is filled with water and Epsom Salts or Magnesium Sulphate at body temperature. Over 200 kg salt is added which allows you to float without trying to stay afloat.

Floatation hydrotherapy is a zero-gravity environment that allows the mind and body to completely let go, relax, and reset. We use about 450kg of Epsom Salts to get you buoyant and floating in the water making you feel like you’re floating on air.

Floatation therapy is the suspension of a person in a tank of warm salt water, typically in the dark, with limited sensory stimulation. It has been used as a treatment for muscular and psychological tension.

Our tanks are designed with the user in mind. You can float with the top. open or closed and we use the tallest possible floater whereby even the tallest person can still sit up in the tank without hitting his head.

Yes, pregnant women may use float tanks. Floating while pregnant allows you to escape the added weight of pregnancy by taking the strain off the body and spine (and feet!). It promotes excellent sleep, a lovely sense of well being, and can help with all the aches and pains normally associated with pregnancy.

The tanks are kept clean using hydrogen peroxide to maintain PH level. The water filters hourly for 15mins. Ozone generators are also used periodically to ensure extra cleanliness.

The main benefit of using a sensory deprivation tank is to ease mental anxiety and muscle tension. Due to how buoyant the Epsom salt and water solution is, you can fully relax all of your muscles when floating. This is similar to experiencing zero gravity.
